Presidential candidates often keep a running list of influential individuals who they will informally call for ideas, advice, and, perhaps, to scope them out as a potential running mate.

And for several candidates, including at least one in the top tier, former Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is on speed dial. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), in particular, has been in contact with Gillum over the past several months, multiple knowledgeable sources told The Daily Beast.

When reached for comment about the vice presidential buzz, a Warren campaign official said, “that is baseless and not at all true.”

But two sources said the talks between Warren and Gillum resemble the kind of courtship that happens when a leading presidential candidate is exploring potential vice presidential contenders. One source briefed on the communications said the two Democrats have been in contact over the course of the campaign and that it is the “strong impression” that Gillum is a possible vice presidential contender for Warren, who has risen in recent months to become a frontrunner in the 2020 primary, the source said.

“If you’re trying to win Florida, I would be courting Andrew and that’s what’s happening,” a second source familiar with the conversations said.

I live in Florida and still have my Andrew Gillum yard sign in my garage - not sure he is who I'd pick for Warren, that said. For one, he lost Florida - though he came VERY close to winning. For another, even though I dont think it's serious, he has been the subject of an FBI investigation and I just don't think that look great.

On the other hand: he could really excite black voters, and he puts Florida in play. And he's a great campaigner. He really knocked my socks off when he was running for governor here. He had so much energy, he got people so enthusiastic - he really seemed like he could win. (But he didn't. So.)

Wow! I love Andrew Gillum. I don't live in Florida but I donated to him. Interesting!

I like Warren and Harris. They are my first choices now.

Biden is going to be the nominee because he can win. He is double digit ahead of trump in WI.

I am OP and I am all on board if it's Biden. It seems to be down to him or Warren - and Warren seems likely to win if she can excite black voters. But I'm really good with either of them, other than my desperate existential fear that Biden doesn't have the energy for this and Warren keeps talking about unpopular programs even though she is a spectacular campaigner (and I think she'd be a fabulous president).

Also he hasn't held office outside of being mayor of Tallahassee, so he's largely untested - but seems totally full of potential

Yeah - despite how tiny and insignificant Gillum's ethics complaints are compared to EVERYTHING ELSE, it's not what Warren's going to want to be talking about. But Gillum was a powerful voice against Trump - he's taken him on in ways I haven't seen anyone else do nearly as skillfully.

Trump has had numerous ethics violations, both as POTUS and before (ie, when he bribed an official in FL then had to pay a fine for it). I think the bar has been set pretty low regarding ethics violations, which is ironic obviously with the whole "drain the swamp" thing.
