My DD has suddenly become obsessed with these after seeing them in a friend's house. Do these ever go on sale? Are they pretty much $10-$12 everywhere? Or do I wait for BF? How do we know which ones are inside? I don't want to buy many of them and then find out they are the same dolls inside.

Target. They are on sale quite often. Also, look for their holiday coupons right now.

The basic doll (the ones that come in a ball) are pretty much $11, although sometimes you'll find them on sale through Target or Amazon for $9-$10. I find Amazon is actually you best bet (as long as you are not buying them from secondary sellers who are jacking up the price) as Target usually has limited stock, at least in store.

There is no way to find out what is inside before you open. If you only buy a couple dolls, its unlikely you'll get the same one but there is always a chance. There are also different "series" of dolls, so if you want to guarantee you don't get duplicates buy from different series.

Yes, that’s pretty much the price. Every series is usually a different price, like the ones in the big cylinder tubes cost more than the ball ones. You’ll never know which ones are inside, it’s supposed to be a surprise. My daughter has about 30 of these , though, and she actually doesn’t have any duplicates.

I spent $30 on a L.O.L bubbly surprise which includes a pet. The birthday girl went crazy over it. Well worth it.
