Cashmere -- where do you buy your sweaters?

Anonymous
I've heard J.Crew and Lands End are best bets for cashmere sweaters. I'm curious to see where you all buy your cashmere?

My sister got me a cashmere sweater from Land's End that is great, but I get most of mine from Macy's - their Charter Club house brand - or Lord & Taylor. If you're buying they can be a lot cheaper, particularly after Christmas.

Lord and Taylor- coupons galore!

It depends upon the ply you want. Not all cashmere is created equal. There is the less-expensive stuff and the more plush. Most stores will have 1 - 2 ply. A better sweater will be 6-ply.

Jcrew, Filenes, Loehmans, Nordstroms, Macys. I love cashmere! BTW: I do not like Lands End cashmere, though I like LE for lots of things. Pilled very quickly.

Also, I like 2-3 ply for Washington weather. 6ply is very heavy.

speaking of cashmere, how do you all store your sweaters? I use a cedar chest, yet STILL have the worst luck with moth holes.

Loehman's

Cedar chest really doesn't work as I found out. Buy some lavendar scented moth crystals and divide them into 10 piles. Pour into envelopes, seal and then tuck in all around the cashmere. Don't pour directly onto any fabric.

Supposedly J. Crew gets their cashmere from the same cashmere mill as Loro Piana, a very high-end brand that costs many times more than J. Crew. Don't know if it's true but I have heard very good things about J. Crew's cashmere. Personally I tend to stay away from cashmere as even the good stuff starts to pill and look crappy after not too long.

While Loro Piana does supply J. Crew with cashmere, the quality of the end products is very different:

While I like J. Crew, I find its cashmere to be quite poor. Sweaters from higher quality lines (Loro Piana, Tse, Cucinelli, etc.) are both softer and last much longer without pilling.

What do you buy instead?

True, but it is so soft and the warmest thing every without being bulky. Even today I got away with wearing a silk long john type camisole under a cashmere turtleneck and left my coat in the car for most of the errands I ran today.
