What’s your toddler/preschool clothing for temps?

Anonymous
I moved from an area where we pretty much just wore t shirts and maybe a light jacket if it rained. Do you have clothing and outerwear rules you keep in your head as temps fluctuate? My child is 3 and is just joining a center where they will get outdoor time every day.

For example
80 degrees and above - shorts/short sleeve
50-60 - sweatshirt over long pants
40s - thicker fleece and lined pants
Freezing or below - puffy coat

My personal thermostat is weird so I can’t really on my own feeling!

What you have is basically what we do. If you're not sure, just leave a jacket or something in your kid's cubby, so they can have it if the teachers think they'll need it.

No. If a kid is running around they might feel warm and not want a jacket.

My kids have never worn fleece OR lined pants.

What do they wear when it’s in the 40s? I didn’t think a fleece jacket was too warm at 45 degrees even for playground time.

Sweatpants, as opposed to jersey weight pants, are fine when it’s in the 40s. We have a few pairs of micro fleece pants for the kids to wear when it gets really cold.

I mostly dress my toddler for whatever temperature it will be when she has playground time at preschool.
If it's a high of 75 and up my 2 year old wears shorts/dresses/rompers
High in 60s a long sleeve shirt, maybe a light jean jacket too, maybe a dress or leggings
Highs in 50s long sleeve sweater and pants, light jacket for drop off
Highs in 40s jacket, but not too heavy
Highs in 30s, fleece leggings, sweater, and warm puffy jacket, mittens and hat.
Kids tend to run warmer than we do and are more content in colder weather than adults.

Sweatshirt and jeans jacket? Winter jacket? Whatever. It's not a big deal. If they're cold, it's only for a little while.

OP I do something similar. It doesn't need to be exact. And as your kid gets older, they will be able to tell you what they prefer. Mine have never worn mittens really, but they do wear hats. It makes sense, mittens/gloves really get in the way of playing. Hats don't.

My kids are in elementary school, but my basic guidelines are

Highs in high 70s/80s -- short sleeves, shorts, no jacket
Low 70s -- light long pants, short sleeves, maybe windbreaker/sweatshirt in the morning
60s -- long pants, long sleeves, windbreaker/fleece
high 40s/50s -- long pants, long sleeves, light down jacket
30s and below -- long pants, long sleeves, winter jacket with scarves, hats, mittens depending on how cold. Sometimes the inside clothes are heavier and they do have fleecy "warm" pants if they want to, but often they choose not to because they make them too warm when they're inside.

Varies depending on the weather that day -- some mornings are reall cold but warm up a lot during the day. Sometimes they'll take off their jackets and that's fine, they'll put them on if they get cold.

Long sleeve shirt + shorts.

DS runs warm naturally. He is over due for a haircut, too, so his head is always warm.

He is also always moving, playing, running, ...in motion so he definitely is generating sufficient body heat.

70’s and above-shorts and T-shirt. No coat at school

50-60 pants, long sleeve shirt and I send in the normal winter coat. On upper 60’s I might just send in light jacket. However, morning are so much colder that he needs the heavy jacket.

50 and below- pants, long shirt or sweatshirt, winter jacket and hat and gloves available.

Don't forget about shoes. Thin cotton socks and airy athletic shoes are fine for 60 and up, but you will want to go heavier as the weather gets colder. We even have fur lined boots for when it's 10 degrees and below. And we do tights under pants once it's 40 or so, even for a boy - H&m has boy ones in different weights. If you have money to burn get one pair of merino wool long johns to wear under pants and sweaters. Ditto in scarf/hat/mittens. For rainy days we have a light rain coat and waterproof rain pants and rubber Crocs boots. They offer zero warmth however, so add wool socks if it's cold and wet outside.

Tights under pants? Do you mean base layers?

I mean tights pants. Like I wear tights under pants in winter, so does my child. Like these: https://m2.hm.com/m/en_us/productpage.0695909002.html
