DS wants a diverse liberal school. Possibly majoring in something related to health, sports, and or business. He's also looking into colleges with decent basketball programs. Being biracial(black and white), he doesn't feel comfortable with a school with little diversity. His private school is probably 10% black, but there are a decent number of Asian students as well.
We are looking at schools like(also the ones in the title): Rider LaSalle Seton Hall St. John's |
| VCU has a great health/medical program and a fabulous basketball team. It is very diverse. My son is there now and loves the school and the city. |
| Pitt |
| Rutgers |
| St. Mary’s College of Maryland |
| Does DS hope to play on the basketball team or just be able to root for a team with a chance to go far in March? |
| UMBC |
| George Mason |
| Temple was great for me. I chose it for its diversity as well. I’m AA. |
| Focus on something that matters when picking a school. Ethnic diversity means nothing |
You would think this would be the case. It's certainly what we were expecting to find when we visited. But it's not. After 10 minutes on campus, my DS, who is used to and at home with the diversity in his public high school, looked around and remarked that the place was all white. I looked around and he was right. So, not believing my eyes, I looked it up later. AA students make up only 5% of the population, Hispanic students even less than that. Not sure how a public university in a major urban center could be so un-diverse, but it is. My DS crossed it off his list, for other reasons in addition to its lack of racial diversity. |

For a minority kid, diversity does matter. Not fitting in can suck. |
