Foreigner who killed teen in car crash flees the country to evade justice

Shocking, isn’t it?

Except in this case it’s the wife of a US diplomat in the UK who claimed diplomatic immunity to avoid questioning and then left the country. How can the Ambassador, Woody Johnson, support this?

It is upsetting, but you do know that it has happened here, too? I'm trying to remember, but the son of an ambassador killed someone here a few years ago and claimed immunity. Just like the parking tickets.

That's tragic, but this isn't a unique case, unfortunately. It's happened in the US as well.

When a Georgian diplomat killed a woman in a car accident at Dupont Circle, Georgia waived immunity. The diplomat was tried, found guilty, and went to jail. The US should have similarly waived immunity.

+1. Diplomatic immunity is there to protect our diplomats from political persecution. Not let their wives get away with murder.

They likely came back to DC. Unfortunately, her actions effectively put an end to her spouse’s career. She/he will spend the rest of their career riding a desk at Langley, instead of living the ex-pat spy life.

Accidents aren’t murder, but she needs to answer for this.

We don’t know, do we? It could have been a freak accident, running a red light, speeding, DUI or actual heat of passion murder. Without an investigation, there is no way to know.

It’s pretty obvious that she was a dumb American who forgot that Brits drive on the left side of the road. She turned out of the military base, drove in the right lane going the wrong direction, and hit the poor kid on a motorbike in a head on collision.

Yes, this seems very likely.

You do not know that. FWIW, if she has been living in Great Britain, she likely was quite competent driving on the left hand side of the road. I've lived in Japan and it is amazing how quickly you learn to drive on the left.

And, in Japan, if an American is involved in an accident, the American is almost always held responsible. At least, it was that way a while ago. I had a friend who was in a cab involved in an accident, and the cabbie told her to leave or she would be held responsible--even though she was his passenger. The rules may have change now--at least i hope so.

Disgusting rat shirking responsibility. I hope she never has a moment of peace.

That boy”s poor mother saying every part of her body hurts.

The letter from Woody Johnson is horrid Rather than being contrite and sympathetic to the parents, he refers to the child he lost, making his letter about himself and not about them.

I hate it when people do this, and someone with an ounce of diplomatic skill should have removed it from his letter.

That's still a cushy job. Knowing how the gov’t works though, nothing will happen to the husband.
