My son is in the 3rd grade at a new school, we just moved into the area. I hate the school! (Private). I have him accepted into a different school which could happen in Jan. What are your thoughts on moving him mid year or next fall? He is very well adjusted and does move easy, poor kid has moved 10 times in 9 years. (husbands job). |
You hate his current school, but does he? |
I hate his school for reasons he would not be aware of, and I would not discuss with him. He likes it okay. Not really bonded with anyone in particular. |
Do you plan to move again soon? If so, do not move him at all until you move. |
this should be it for quite a while. I am hoping until after the 8th grade. |
He is in 3rd grade and certainly old enough that he will want an explanation on why he is being relocated. You might want to start thinking up your excuse if you don't want to tell him the truth. |
At third grade, he's going to know something is really off. OP, what is it that you hate about the school? Is it something that is so terrible it requires a move in mid year? That seems like a strong reaction. How do you know you'll be happy with the school you want to move him to? I probably would wait until fall and use the spring to gather more information, but the possibility of that really depends on why you dislike the current school so much. |
Can you do that? Most private schools make you commit for a year. |
P.S. I would wait until the summer. It's December 15. You'd ruin his holiday break! |
I would say that it obviously depends on what it is that you hate about the school. If it is something that will have a lasting impact on your child (he is being bullied and the school will not address, he is being taught religion in a way you find offensive/harmful to your own family's beliefs, he is being grouped in a way that is discriminatory or insensitive, ... ??), then I would move him immediately. If the problem is that you don't care for the culture of the school, don't care for the curriculum that the school uses, don't care for the priorities of the school and how these affect the kids' education, etc., then I would definitely consider changing schools but it would not be so essential to do so in January. Half a school year will not harm your child's overall learning so much that a disruption is warranted. |
What did you decide? |
I would move him now... |
