Title and Registration

Just purchased a used car from an individual seller. Went to DMV and there was a 3hr wait. Any suggestions for centers that don't have as much of a wait time? TIA.

Welcome to the real world. You should have stayed.

And you understand that DMVs are local, right?

local to the state the OP lives in. obviously they can't go to the MD DMV if she lives in VA but there are DMV service centers all through the state that they can visit. how far do they wanna drive to save the time sitting in the dmv.

if you are DC, you are fvcked. sorry...

I appreciate your response. I have health issues and waiting that long is tough. I am in Vienna but ok to drive anywhere in fairfax county or Alexandria.

I just had to do this and the VA DMV page shows the wait times at locations. I ended up driving to Arlington (no wait) from Alexandria (over an hour wait for most services)

Could you possibly make an appointment the next time?

Also, a lot of our DMV services can be accessed at one of the local Auto Club office locations.

OP. Thank you - this helped!

What triggers the emissions and inspections need? I see the seller did inspections in his state last month. How will I know when to do this. I got the title and registration and paid $1600 (had forgotten how high that can be!).

safety inspection is every 12 months based on the sticker on the windshield.

emissions is done every 2 years. pretty sure a a vehicle purchase wold trigger it. they may not let you register vehicles until emission is complete

Just be prepared for the wait times listed to be completely off. I took my kid for a permit earlier this year, and the wait time for that service was showing online as under an hour. Actual wait time was about three hours (and the website was still showing less than 60 minutes when we left).

Also, if this matters to you, just an FYI that the Fair Oaks location doesn't have customer restrooms. If you ask, they direct you to the ones in the JCPenney next door.

OP. Thank you my title and registration was done. They didn't need emissions and inspection. But I do need to do inspection in VA though the last inspection was done just weeks ago in another state.

OP. That would have been a disaster. I am luckily done with that step. Thank you.
