Community service day -- no SSL hours?

DC's school will have a community service day this year and I have been told that students will spend the day completing community service projects but won't receive SSL hours. Can they do that?

Seems odd since they are desperate to make sure kids graduate...but sure they can.

I think it is because students can't earn SSL during the school day (except for the 10 they earn each year in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade that is built into the curriculum).

Student's can't earn SSL hours for volunteer work performed during the school day. God forbid Larla do anything kind for others without some sort of reward!

Is that true? My child earned all of her hours helping a teacher over lunch in middle school. Maybe lunch is different?

Yes, during lunch or outside the school day is OK.
