I have 3 kids, youngest is 2.5. My 2 older boys in elementary do not use curse words. I don't curse often. I won't say never but not often. I don't know where the 2yo learned it but she has been saying it for the past month. At first, I tried to ignore it. Thought perhaps I heard her wrong. Then everyone made such a big deal out of it that she thinks it is hilarious since it brings her so much attention. Yesterday I gave her a time out for saying bad words.
What should I do to correct this behavior? Is a time out the right way to go? I have never had this problem with my older kids. They are 8 and 10 and I have never heard them curse. |
No time outs. No consequences. Nothing. Give it no power to make you angry or make you laugh. Make your older kids also ignore it.
Maybe you can say, "We don't use that word" calmly without further explanation and moving on to something else. |
Ignore it. |
Ignore it. And to the adults who make a big deal of it, tell them to stop giving her the attention. |
Any chance they were attempting to say truck or fork initially? All the attention now making it a popular word to use. |
"What does that mean?" She won't have an answer. Then just act very confused. And then ignore. |
Fox was also problematic in this way for my niece. |
This. My then 3 year old kept saying "fok" and I thought DC picked it up when one of us parents cussed (which was very rare). I later realized DC was talking about a fork. |
Yeah it’s not the f word but people laughing is making her do it more. Relax. It’s funny. And I’m not into cursing and kids. |
Every time she says it, correct her and say “fork”. And even hand her a fork. |
