how does summer school work?

I have kids in high school who were not able to get into courses that they wanted this year (a math course and a foreign language course). The guidance counselors say they should consider taking the courses during the summer. Could someone explain to me how summer school works? Does a course typically meet every weekday for all of the summer? The info about summer school won't be available until April but they usually sign up for summer camps, jobs, and trips in January. I'm not sure what they should do.

Are they eligible for dual enrollment? They could pick up the classes at the Community college and PGCPS would pay the tuition.

One is eligible for dual enrollment. The other is too young.
