DS 14 new to soccer - what to do in the winter

Anonymous
Daughter, 14, started playing rec soccer last year and is playing JV soccer at her high school and rec soccer again this Fall. She has improved tremendously with her JV team and she loves it. We are wondering what she should do this winter to improve her skills (she is still catching up).

If she wants something like structured than indoor soccer, she can keep training on her own. Running for conditioning, look up practice drills on YouTube to help improve skills, etc.

She does seemed to have outgrown the rec league already. Club tryouts are in May here. Will look into futsal.

Any recommendations for futsal opportunities for my DS 14? We live in Fairfax. He is a lower level travel player (low division in NCSL), and it seems that many futsal places around here only cater to DA/ENCL level players.

The comment that DA/ECNL are the Futsal destinations is definitely not the case. One example is Alexandria. They have a very deep Futsal program and they are a CCL/NCSL club. Other options exist

I think Alexandria is also considering expanding the number of travel futsal teams per age group this year. Even if you don't do travel, you could try to hook up with an Alexandria soccer team that is doing the "travel division of rec," meaning playing other Alexandria travel teams within in the rec league. They generally do not match up the travel soccer players against pure rec futsal teams, even within the rec division.

Futsal and basketball....and don't forget to get out and do outdoor soccer when weather permits.

NCSL has a partnership with St. James for Futsal. Emails were recently sent out. Encourage others on your team to join and participate if interested in Futsal. All levels.
