threats against Deal Students?

Anonymous
Just got an email from Deal out of the blue with subject line Important Correspondence from Deal:

Dear Deal Middle School Parents, Guardians, and Families:

At Deal, we highly value and are committed to fostering a safe and secure learning environment. A large part of that commitment is communicating potential safety issues with parents when they arise.

This morning, school administration was alerted that violent threats were made against our students via social media. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has been notified, and officers will be on site to provide an increased level of security and ensure the safety of our students.

We take all threats seriously and approach them with extreme caution.

The safety of our school community is paramount at all times. If you have any questions, please call the school office at (202) 939-2010 or contact me via email at diedre.neal@k12.dc.gov.

Thank you for your support.

Anyone have a clue as to what's going on/what happened? Usually I hear about drama and fights from my 8th grader but this is not something I've heard anything about.

No clue. Can't find anything out there. Have to wait for the kids to get home!!

I hate vague emails like that! We need details. Neal at Deal is vague-posting.

Exactly . What’s the point of this communication other than freaking parents out?

Have you all searched your kid's instagram and other accounts yet (you have their passwords, right)?

I suspect some student(s) threatened other student(s) in one of those places and someone reported it.

I love that line, “if you have any questions...”. Is there anyone reading that letter that has no questions???

OP - my 8th grader has a fairly narrow social media circle. So nothing there. I agree with your suspicions, though I think given the wording it was threats against more than one student.

I do wish they'd provide more specifics. It's probably nothing, and I weighed whether to post it here, but decided I'd rather know, if there's a DCUM-er who might have a sliver of info.

A kid made a threat to shoot classmates. I don't know which grade. The school and MPD are on top of it.

Hmmmmm any other school and this would be a big story, as per usual Deal sweeps stuff under the carpet to reemerge later on as if it was new news!

I imagine there is a balance to be struck between sufficiently informing the school community and giving a lot of public attention to the person doing the threatening and perhaps encouraging others.

My DC reported that his advisory teacher said it was an adult/teenager and not a student at the school who made the threat. Apparently, many of the students were completely freaked out. Has anyone else heard this?
