Kids Ride Free SmarTrip cards, is there another way to get them?

Anonymous
For some reason the one my kid had from last year stopped working over the summer. My kid is at Wilson this year and they keep running out. The kids have to listen for the morning announcement letting them know when the school has more. Then during lunch they are to pick them up but it's first come first served and every time the line is huge and they run out again. My kid has not had luck getting one yet. All they say is they've ordered more and dont know when they will arrive, but kids should listen for the announcement and try to be one of the firsts in line that day to get them.

This is getting old and in the meantime I'm shelling out the money for my kid to metro back and forth every day. Does anyone know if there is a way to get a card outside of ones school?

The distribution deadline is Sept 30 when last year's cards were supposed to stop working.

Call the Kids Ride Free office (202) 673-1740 and ask if there's a solution.

My kid is at Deal MS and I was told to register through their website, and supposedly the cards would be handed out to kids once they were requested. I registered but have not heard that the card came home yet. Has anyone received their new card this way at Deal?

They sent a notice that they are ready to be picked up in welcome canter. My kid got his last week.

We asked at our school- had to sign up in the office. Due to a backlog took about 10 days.

In the meantime last year’s card still working as well.

so, the new cards should already be at the schools?? if we have never had one before can we use the new one ASAP?

I am not sure if kids still ride free all the time of just during school hours. It seems this was of some debate at one point.

You can use it as soon as you get it. It seems to work at all times, but only within DC.

I missed the notice. Where do you register? On Deal's website or Kids Ride Free?

DC screwed this up royally. After telling us to get them over the summer at specific distribution locations, they abruptly changed their minds and put it on the schools. The schools said that this didn't work last year, as the KRF cards were never delivered on time or in enough quantities, even though they gave specific enrollment numbers. But it has happened again. My D's high school is given a few cards every few days and runs out quickly. Not their fault. Mayor Bowser, where are you and why is this happening?????

We got a card (charter school) and didn't have to register anything. The new card works.

We requested ours at the Adams office a week and a half ago and received it on Monday. Kiery indicated there was a backlog, but that they are coming in steadily to them.

Hmm, I signed up through th website but haven’t received a notice. Was the notice regarding just your card or did it say all card requests were filled and anyone who registered on deal’s website could pick theirs up?
