Why is it you can blast some of his music and just feel good. I don't even like his stuff that much but I'm having a hard week and playing Learning to Fly is almost changing my life.

It's good all around. His music is "classic" in that it appeals to several types of people. Young, old etc. It's well written and well preformed.
Plus he preforms and writes his own stuff.

It's so true. My old roommate loved him. Finally I said I'd go to a concert of his (yes, years ago) and LOVED it. Realized I knew all his songs. Classic-go-to-music.

I love Tom Petty too. My freshman year in college Wildflowers (?) I think that's the name came out. The song "Keep Crawling Back to You" is not the most upbeat but for some reason that year I was so homesick and that song had a lot of meaning for me.

Also love - "American Girl" - I dare you to hear that song and not want to dance.

Tom Petty just put out a great live CD of his entire career. They spent years working on it. HTH
