So this isn't 100% accurate as I was just browsing quickly and wasn't entirely sure on some of the teams, but I took Georgetown University's roster and went through their club / high school breakdown and discovered the following:
High School 7 players, one who had a youth USMNT call up. 2 part-time players (i.e. a couple of years in HS, a couple of years in DA) DA 16 players, including 3 at MLS sides, 2 with USMNT Youth callups and one other international youth call-up 2 part-time players (i.e. a couple of years in HS, a couple of years in DA) Foreign 2 foreign players. Have never seen a list overall for all the NCAA, but figure Georgetown (a good program) is probably a good indication of the breakdown DA vs. HS. Anyone see any other studies? |
So from what I have heard from people close to Georgetown, the woman do not get special treatment from admissions. So they have problems getting some of the highly sought after recruits because of this. Georgetown may not be a good example. |
This was the men's side. |
PP referenced MLS clubs. Clearly talking about men. |
Tennis team has pull ![]() |
PP may be right about lack of special treatment for women’s players, but I’d be surprised if that’s the case. Women’s team is a national top program now. Probably ahead of the men’s team in general, despite the fact that the men this year are currently a top 5 team. |
Maryland, also not 100%, may have missed or double counted a player, and not as complete as OP.
10 foreign 9 DA 2 Travel/1 yr DA 5 HS/Celtic 2 HS 2 travel, no HS listed |
It’s a joke that universities waste money on colllege soccer. Net money loser. Only football and men’s b-ball make money. Rest of NCAA sport should be club. |
Sasha is all about taking foreign kids. |
It’s a good mix. I am surprised there are not more foreign kids playing us college soccer. Great chance to parlay athletic talent into meaningful value against lesser talent pool. I would have killed to get a basketball scholarship to Oxford or Cambridge. If going pro is not likely or attractive and you can get the spot, why not? |
They should post these stats when they’re shilling their ‘ID’ camps to club teams. |
Given that they appear from the above to have 9 American players who did not come from the DA, they should indeed post these stats. That's way more than most D1 national championship contenders. I am a huge fan of the Maryland soccer program and Sasho in particular. He has done more to try to get the NCAA to approve the eminently reasonable 10 month soccer schedule than any other coach, and has built a great program in College Park with one of the best soccer fan bases in the country. He also runs absolutely terrific summer camps for kids. |
+1 to all of this |
5 are from Celtic - that is not a normal non-DA club. I would not count that among the regular HS players. |
I'm not sure I'd make that distinction. In most cases, you are probably going to be need to be coming from a nationally competitive non-DA team to get on a roster at a school like this if you are not coming from the DA. Celtic fits the bill in a variety of age groups, while other clubs (like McLean the last couple of years) might only have one or two great age groups. |
