NCS, Sidwell, Holton, GDS, Maret, Visi -- does this ranking order make sense for HS girl applicant?

Anonymous
We've been arguing in my law office about the ranking for a H.S. girl applicant. I cross-referenced several rankings reports. I provided this list to my law partners.

Based on what criteria? Sports? college placement? number of Ugg wearers per 100? And doesnt the "ranking" change depending on the kid and their priorities/interests?

yes. spot on... really sidwell and ncs could be switched around but they are ahead of the others.

For what - being loved by DCUM? I sincerely hope OP knows more about what is best for the child than this.

Actually for High School I would put NCS in front of Sidwell.

NCS is for hardworking girls who are smart but not brilliant and who work best under pressure and with clear direction. I'd send a brilliant and driven girl to Sidwell or GDS -- which I'd choose would depend on the girl's personality and interests. GDS for the future artists, academics, and activists. Sidwell for the future movers and shakers -- more the kind of girl who wants to run the system than buck it.

Holton strikes me as the suburban counterpart of NCS -- not quite as intellectual/meritocratic and not such a grind which may mean more humane for most girls. Maret is similar in orientation to GDS but too small to provide an equally (academically) talented top cohort. That said, for a girl who wouldn't be in that top cohort at GDS, Maret could be a better choice.

Visi is a first-rate Catholic school. Religion matters (in a way it doesn't at NCS despite the "Cathedral"). More economic diversity than any of the others. Serious about academics, character, and sports. Don't know about the arts.

PP you know nothing...you just made up that info as it is incorrect.

OP, you're arguing about this with your law partners? Is there a real live student involved?
Anonymous
I agree with PPs who think this is nuts. Each of these schools is good but if you don't match the culture of the school with your real live daughter, you will have one unhappy child.

Once again I'm astounded by the whole ranking business. All of the schools on that list are excellent but you should go and visit them to see where your daughter would fit in best. You could not go wrong with any of those schools - just check out their college placements and you'll find little difference. We toured NCS, Holton, Maret, Sidwell and GDS and I knew immediately which one I liked best and where DD would do best. It never occurred to me that I should send her somewhere else based on some arbitrary 'ranking' made up by insecure parents.

Yup -- odds are you (or your daughter) will have strong visceral reactions. These schools have very different vibes from each other. And all are great choices for some girls and poor choices for others.

I have a daughter at one of those schools and I know kids (and adults) who attend(ed) each of the others.

PP you are relying on info then that is 100 years old. Holton was ranked higher than NCS in the WSJ poll and it is a grind. Maybe you know someone who went there 20 years ago or more when it was easier.

Sorry to hear that.

OMG, people are actually ranking these schools! In terms of what? Which ones your children go to? Obama's children? Sad, very sad.
