| I take the car (2008 Lexus ES350) to a local shop and they tell me the upstream a/f sensor needs replacing. They also recommend servicing the fuel injection system. Total cost about $600. I give them the go ahead. They call me about 90 minutes later and tell me the sensor has seized (the mechanic can't get the thing off) and now I need a new catalytic converter. Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? I can't believe a serious mechanic would have difficulty removing a sensor. I'm also now looking for another shop that do the work. Thanks. |
| Yes, it happens if the pipes rust. The sensor is just screwed into the exhaust pipe and taking it off can be a disaster. If they didn’t damage the pipe you could try another shop but expect you may get the same result. |
Thanks, I've got another appointment tomorrow morning with a dealer. We'll see. |
| I just received a recall notice for something similar to what you are describing. look up air injection pumps and air switching valves special service campaign. |
For what type of vehicle? |
Lexus gx460 |
Guy from Jim Coleman Toyota was able to remove the sensor, so I saved about $1,500. |

The sensor is so small....
But so costly to fix when it malfunctions. Oops! I mean replace. |
