Cytotec for incomplete miscarriage or D&C?

Anonymous
I tried to let it happen naturally but I’ve been moderately cramping bleeding (with heavier at times) for 4 weeks now. Back in July it showed there wasn’t any development or heart beat at 6 weeks. Midwife did an ultrasound today and said tissue is in the bottom part of my uterus but not passed yet. She said to try Cytotec or I could do D&C. I was leaning towards trying Cytotec but am really worried it won’t go well and I’ll hemorage and end up in ER. Anyone have any advice? If you took Cytotec what was your experience? Dr said take 3 pills orally at night.

I took it and my experience was not terrible. I'd been scared by reading stories online, but for me it was really like a heavy period with a lot of cramping. I took it on a Friday evening and was able to go back to work Monday afternoon. Note that I took it for my m/c from the beginning, I didn't wait for it to happen naturally, so I don't know if it's different for an incomplete m/c.

Op here. Thanks for sharing your experience! What did you take for dosing? Was it all at once and orally? Thanks!

I had a D&C initially and then they discovered left over tissue.

Moved to Cyctotec and it literally did nothing for me. Multiple tries and didn't even have a single cramp. It was as if I'd taken nothing.

Ended up with a second D&C.

I took Cytotec two times for an incomplete miscarriage. Quite a bit of cramping and bleeding; however, I still had retained tissue and needed a D&C. I would say the Cytotec experience was not awful, but I would probably ask your midwife how likely it is to be effective. I'm sorry you are going through this.

I took it years ago. OB recommended it over a D&C to preserve uterine lining. Heavy bleeding and painful cramps overnight, but I was back at work the next day.

I realize this is now a couple of weeks old and op has probably settled on one or the other. I had a d&c for one miscarriage and cytotec for another. Both were relatively straightforward and physically painless, especially given my expectations. Just putting a counterpoint out there bc I know the internet is full of failed cytotec stories.
