Rosemary Hills/North Chevy Chase

Anonymous
I'm looking at a house where my (future) kids would attend Rosemary Hills for K-2 and North Chevy Chase for 3-6. Any thoughts on either of these schools?

Did you look in the archives? I think RH has been discussed a few times. The class sizes tend towards the larger size but we've been very happy with the school. I have heard good things about NCC but we are not there yet.

I've heard good things about teachers, etc at Rosemary Hills, but we chose to go private for those years instead b/c it is just so, so big. Not only do the individual class sizes trend large, there are a LOT of classes. I think last year there were something like 12 different kindergarten classes. Yikes.

OP here. Thanks for the helpful comments. I just noticed that these schools have been discussed throughly on the general school board. I assumed (wrongly) that the discussions would be here since they are MD public schools. Thanks again!

OP, the MD Public Schools forum just appeared recently so there are definitely older discussions in the Schools General Discussion forum. I have a kindergartner at RHPS this year and we have been very happy. There are 24 in her class and 8 kindergarten classes this year. It is really nice having all the little kids in one place and the parents at the school are incredibly active.

I am probably the OP of one of the previous queries on this topic. My son is now in K at RHPS and we're pretty happy. Kindergarten in general is a tough adjustment for an active boy, but he actually enjoys school and, as I posted on another contentious thread, I have yet to see a worksheet which seems to be a pleasant anomaly compared to other MoCo schools. His teacher is engaged and communicates with us regularly about any issues that have arisen for him. The parent community is super involved (our class has like 6 room parents!), and though it's big there's just a nice, old-fashioned friendliness about the place. And for a boy, I'm thrilled that it's a limited age range - the idea of K-5 all in the same school baffles me.

The reality is that it is a very large school, and even for a kid who'd been in daycare and preschool for several years, the first few weeks were rough. I don't think he's still quite found himself yet but that may be just his nature (same was true in preschool.) But I volunteer at the school on a regular basis and what I see makes me confident that my child is getting the right start in his education.

We live near NCC and I think much of what I've said about RHPS is true for that school, but it is a much smaller class cohort.

I think at either school, you'll find administrators and parents happy to talk with you - just call and ask for a tour or an orientation, and check out the super active PTA listservs!
