Reid Temple Christian Academy for kindergarten

Is it really as rigorous for kindergarten as they claim? What kind of work are the kids doing and getting for homework? Likes? Dislikes?

I had my son there from PreK2 to Kindergarten. It was a little over the top for me. Focusing and pushing stem. They're 3 and 4 years old. Focus should be more on social emotional skills and how to properly hold pencils, etc. The program wasn't bad but I feel like they were pushing too much on the young children. We are no longer there for 1st grade.

I think they want the reputation of rigor but its really over the top.

i kinda got that impression as well. Just wasn't sure if it was reading too much into it or not. I was shocked that the admissions screening/testing was computerized.

Are you happy with your sons current school? If so, would you mind sharing ?

Sure I don't mind sharing. He attends Browne Academy in VA. It's the first year. It's in Alexandria, VA. It is very diverse. That's what I really like. Also, its not religious based. If you don't want to travel, I was also going to possibly send him to Holy Trinity in Bowie. My commute time to Alexandria is not bad tho, 30 minutes during rush hour maybe.

My kid will be in kindergarten there next year unless something changes. Maybe if they are doing the Mandarin Immersion program, it may be harder.

Is your kid already in preschool there?

When I toured RT for preschool I got that vibe as well. I decided to go with Highland Park Academy for preschool and I’ve been very pleased with my decision so far.

I toured Highland Park as well. I liked them but they were a little too far out of the way, me living in Upper Marlboro so we went with Grace Brethren. Its just OK for Prek-4.

My child is there now and will be in K next year. I don't think the pace is bad...but I have heard it picks up in Kindergarten. I look at the older students who have come through the program, and they are so bright and talented, and well-mannered. I love the environment also.

Can you share more about highland park?

Highland Park is good. My 1st grader is reading on 3rd grade level and has been there since she was 3 years old. No complaints. Class sizes are small. Only complaint would be the sizes get very small after 5th grade.

Another HPCA parent here. I have a child in their PreK3 program that has been there since she was 2. We love the school and the family like atmosphere; my child has truly blossomed in the last 1.5yr. I will probably keep her there for elementary as well.
