half-day kindergarten

Do they exist? And do I want this? I have a nearly 3yo , and am thinking about moving the next year or so within nova. I went to half-day kindergarten myself and thought it was great. However, it seems most schools are full day.

Where are you looking? In FFX, there are many but not all are full day. And, as I understand it, they may be phasing that out at many schools due to budget cuts. But, not sure where that stands now.

My neighborhood FFX Co. elementary has 1/2 day kindergarten.

Right now about 100 of the 130ish FCPS elementary schools have full day K. Full day K is on the chopping block next year for all but the Title 1 elementary schools.

Really PP? So next year, the only FFX Co schools that will still have full day K are the Title 1 schools? I wish they would do that in my county!

I think that a half-day is really the best thing for most children.

It hasn't been finalized yet, but it's a definite possibility.

Arlington has NO half day. You can take your kid out early every day (they have some policy for that), but I can't imagine that is a good idea.

Op here. Thanks for the replies. DH's job is in falls church city, so Fairfax county, Arlington, or falls church city are possibilities.

McLean, we have 1/2 day here.

Pros, is 1/2 day and child seem to adjust to school well.

Cons, after school care will be needed if you work. PM replacement is possible unless you and spouse work FT.

I wish we had half day kindergarten in Prince George's County. All the Kindergartens here are full day, and I have a child who has a summer birthday. She's in preschool three hours each day now, and it completely wipes her out. I just can't see her making it through a full day of kindergarten next year, especially as there is no nap or rest period for the kids there.

I really hope they don't ax all day kindergarten in FFX County. My DD really enjoys the interaction with other kids (she is in all day preschool now). Does anyone know what the odds are that the eliminate all day K???

What are "Title 1" elementary schools? Can someone point me to where I can find out about the full day K being axed? I find it hard to find very specific info. in search on the FFX Co. schools website.

My child is in half day K, and I personally think it's better for a child that age then full day. It's not like they are rigorously learning hard core stuff all day, so I don't think full day is necessary.

But the majority of kids at my DDs school have adjusted fine to full day preK, so don't think this is necessarily a pro of only 1/2 day.

If they switch to half-day K, chances are it will be even more of a pressure cooker since they will squeeze all of that "learnin" into 3 hrs. I doubt switching to half-day will do anything to make it more developmentally appropriate.

To find the Title 1 schools, try this: http://commweb.fcps.edu/directory/byprogram.cfm

If this doesn't work, at fcps.edu, click on "Schools and Centers" at the top and search by Special Program.

I don't know about likelihood, but it's the second largest $$ savings on the current proposed list of cuts, so I would suspect it's pretty real.
