| We live near Friendship Heights in NW DC and have a 6th grader who wants to try martial arts ( karate or taekwondo maybe) but feels embarrassed to start as a beginner with the little kids. Am wondering if anyone knows of a place that does private lessons to get a kid like him up to speed before entering a group class? Would travel out of immediate area for a super engaging instructor or studio. |
| We live in VA but most places have beginners at all ages. Classes should be grouped by levels also by age. I’ve seen plenty of adults and older children start as beginners. I’d start by researching and observing the places near you to see if they are a good fit and the type of training he is looking for. |

100% this:
http://www.kaizenfitnessusa.com/weekend Sunday classes @ TI, 2pm My sixth grader started beginner on Sundays last fall a year ago with the little kids (like 5/6/7 year olds.) I was sure she wouldn't go back the following week. I emailed them and they switched her to intermediate, she was not the only white belt and it was a very positive experience. I suggest signing him up for intermediate where there will be older kids. He is not likely to the be the only 6th grader, no experience, white belt. After the fall session, there were plenty of older kids without experience that started in intermediate. I was relieved, my kid is now a yellow belt and I am hoping she continues to black. |
