if your kids love the Sound of Music- what other movies do you watch?

My girls (8 and 5) love the Sound of Music soo much. I get requests to watch the movie weekly. What other movies might they like?

Get Ty Burr's book, called something like, "The best movies to watch with your kids"

It's a great compilation and explains why each movie is good.

His theory is that if kids are exposed to really good movies, they learn to discern what is good vs. what is crap.

Funny, I recall SOM wasn't on his list, just because he thought it was too long. So if your kids have the patience for SOM then I'm sure they'll love these movies.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, the one with Donny Osmond. My kids love Sound of Music and also Joseph.

If it’s the old-school style musical that they like, Mary Poppins and Annie (the old ones) come to mind. Tons of other good musicals too but those are the ones that appealed to my DDs when they were little.

+1. DD loves these, plus an old Cinderella with Leslie Ann Warren and Ginger Rogers (on Amazon now, I think). Alice in Wonderland - We recently watched the 80s version I’d seen as a child and it’s weird and great. She also really liked To Catch A Thief, even though it’s not a musical. Old movies aren’t so horrifically violent, in general, so we like them.

These, plus Fiddler on the Roof (though the second half may be too scary if they are sensitive), Brigadoon, The Music Man, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Mary Poppins
Annie
The Music Man
Agree with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the original with Gene Wilder, not the horrible remake with Johnny Depp)
