| We just moved to VA and need to register our car and switch to VA plates. THe title form asks for the price of the car as well as processing fees and taxes and we can't find those records (they are likely in a box somewhere...). The car was bought used about 7 years ago. I can guess on the price but I am not sure how to guess on the taxes. Anyone else run into this situation? We are moving from DC if that matters. |

Ugh this is such a nightmare. I actually traded in my car instead of dealing with the VA DMV shenanigans after a very ugly scene (in my defense I was pregnant and hormonal, and it was a more complicated situation). DC has no property tax, right? You could probably get away with guesstimating the sales tax and then looking at the website for dealership you bought from (or any DC dealership really) and seeing if you can find their standard taxes and fees. Usually it's like a $500 delivery fee, weird random taxes like shipping and materials or something, a convenience fee, a fee fee...
Or if you pay/paid your car note online maybe it's in your account if it's still active. Or you might have to bite the bullet and find that box or call the DC DMV. Good luck... |
| Better hurry. 30 days to register, right? |
Not really enforced with all the military people. I drove around md plates for nearly 4 months. |
| Excise tax in DC depends on weight of vehicle 6, 7, or 8% of the vehicle price if new (or estimated value if used). |
| Don’t they want to know the value now not what you bought it for? |
Did OP mention “military people”? |
| You should try to find your proof of taxes paid so that VA won’t charge you another tax. If you paid excise tax in DC you should be exempt from the vehicle sales tax in VA |
