Dumb carseat question

Anonymous
DD is about to turn 4 and we have one on the way. She is like, 35 pounds.

What comes after a convertible? Is this what she's supposed to stay in until she's 10? I feel woefully undereducated about what comes next but would kind of like to re-use the big convertible on #3 when she turns 9months/one year sometime next year.

She should remain in the convertible seat (or any seat with a 5 point harness) until at least 40lbs although the official recommendation is until she maxes out either the weight or height limits of the seat. Only then can she move to a booster seat.

High back booster
Then backless booster

Yes, this. And only when she can sit properly should she be in a high back booster.

Are there car seats that convert from 5 point to booster and from high back to no back booster?

Harnessed booster to high back booster to no back booster. Yes, kids generally stay in it till about 10 or when they get a good belt fit.

Yes. Check out the graco transitions or nautilus.

Yes but most of them suck. You are better off with a good convertible seat used as long as possible and then just buying a regular high back booster. The car seats that covert to boosters are big and heavy and hard for kids to seatbelt themselves. I regretted it and we ended up ditching our Britax Frontier for a Graco Turbobooster ($40) when she was big enough.

Our convertible seat (Diono Radian) turns into a high back booster. So my 5 year old is still in the 5 point harness, but she is 44 lbs and 44 inches tall so she could use the high back booster. We'll keep her in the 5 pt harness for a little longer.

However, I do feel ok with her in a back less booster in a pinch (like a short Uber ride) or trip to the playground with her baby sitter.

But basically you go:
Convertible
High back booster seat
back less booster
nothing

High back booster with a 5 point harness (some people call these "convertible seats"). We got the Britax Frontier when DD turned 4 and we needed the convertible for our one year old. DD is 6 and only 40 lbs - we're planning to take the harness off and use the seatbelt around Christmas time.

Sorry, I meant some people call these COMBINATION seats

Just a note that not all cars will fit high back boosters. Our car doesn't have a removable head rest in the back and we couldn't do a high back booster. So we went from convertible to backless booster around age 5.5 (DC was well over height and weight requirements, and was able to sit properly in the seat).

This is interesting. I thought they stay in the car seat until they max it out? My convertible goes to 85lbs. My 4 year old is still rear facing because she's not yet 40lbs.

We got the Graco 4ever and are pretty happy with it but are still in rear-facing convertible mode.

You need to factor in the expiration date of the seat. If it's a 7-year lifespan you might have to get a backless booster before your kid is ready for nothing. However, backless boosters are pretty cheap.

OP here ok. Yes her seat currently has a 7 year expiration date. So we will just get new baby her own convertible for now. DD is def petite and will take awhile to max out her seat. But regardless nothing at all to be done for another year.

Thanks all!
