Are there specific requirements for children entering MoCo Kindergarten? Do they have an assessment or testing before Kindergarten?
We are new to the county and my son is supposed to be starting kindergarten next year and I am not sure he will be "ready." Is it true a child must be writing their name? |
There are no requirements other than that your child is 5 by September 1. If you think your child isn't ready, you can get a one year waiver, during which you either have to home school or put your child in a pre k type program.
One thing I was told after my oldest started school is that once you start in MoCo, the school won't hold your child back unless he or she is extremely behind. If you are worried that your child won't do well, some schools offer lots of services even when there is no diagnosed disability. If you want to know what the pre k completion benchmarks are and also what kids are supposed to be able to do by the end of kindergarten, you can get this from the MoCo public school website. |
When they do "kindergarten roundup" in the spring, they in fact are assessing kids albeit informally. It's been awhile since my kids were in K, but ask around about what the roundup is like at your school. |
