After school caregiver supposed to start tomorrow, but has disappeared?

Anonymous
We interviewed a lovely grad student for our after school nanny position and she (and we) were so excited to have this work out. She even kept texting us the next day. Turns out she lives less than a block away. We offered her the high end of her pay range. Plus overtime and she seemed enthusiastic about it. We emailed her yesterday and texted her twice today to confirm details about tomorrow and haven’t heard a thing. I’m freaking out right now.

I'd be freaking out too. Neighbor they can go play with for a couple of hours?

Try calling her phone.

I’ve debated it, but I’ve texted her twice today. I’m worried she’ll see me as too anxious to work with. Ugh.

She's supposed to start tomorrow. It is terrible that she hasn't gotten back to you, yet. At the very least you need to discuss with her the best way to get a hold of her. Suppose you need to contact her when she's with your child and she is non responsive to your texts?

You are not being overly anxious, you have details to discuss with her before she starts working for you tomorrow.

Call her, OP. I bet she is going to flake on you. So sorry.

Sadly, this isn’t uncommon —especially when the work is PT. She got a better gig or weighed the compensation against distractions from her grad work and decided to focus on her studies.

We could not find a reliable driver ie someone who wouldn’t ghost us and eventually relied on elderly relatives.

Thanks. I’ll call her now. Luckily DH works from home, but he’s traveling all of next week and we really need the help.

+1 This is why we had a full time nanny for so long. There are endless messages on our local listserv of people seeking a "reliable" person for afterschool hours because the person they had got a better hours. PT isn't lucrative for most people.

OP here. Thank you all! She picked up and apparently was still on campus- a hectic first day. She assured me she was still interested and that she would be here tomorrow!
