My DD wants to do a martial art but doesn't know there are different kinds. Which is best for her age range, preferably something that build good foundations in case she decides to do a different martial art or other activity when she gets a little older. We're located in friendship heights but can travel. |
Start with jiujitsu. It’ll help her the most long term. Tae Kwan do, karate, etc are basically just belt factories that don’t teach many real fighting skills.
When she’s older, go for boxing, wrestling, Muay Thai, and possibly Krav Maga. |
Go to a studio that seems good to you. Don’t worry about the exact art. Where do you live? |
+1. Make sure you like the teacher; watch a kids class and see if they seem both happy and focused. System not relevant to the little ones. |
Taekwondo. We found a wonderful teacher and my DD loves it. She has been taking it since she was 2.5. Very positive and character building. |
To me, judo would be the best all-around. It emphasizes a lot of balance, body control, and situational/spatial awareness. I've always liked the vibe and ethos of judo, too.
But above all, a great teacher makes all the difference in the world. |
We love, love, love this taekwondo studio in Bethesda: https://www.tkmainc.com/
