There are images of 21 people in today's DCPS Welcome Back email...

Today's "Welcome Back to DCPS email" from Chancellor Ferebee has images of 21 people spread across 6 photos scattered throughout the email.

Not one person is caucasian; just one appears to be hispanic/indian.

On one level, so what. But on another, it's very much NOT these things we're constantly told are so essential to success:

- diverse
- welcoming
- inclusive

In short, it doesn't give me warm fuzzies that my kids "belong" in DCPS. Are they even wanted? And was this by design, or are the people in DCPS communications simply tone deaf?

I assume that if MCPS sent a similar email showing only caucasians, I'd be reading about it in the WaPo.

I think you just want to launch yet another DC schools/WOTP/EOTP/SES/race conversation.

Are you seriously going to complain about a piece of media where there are too many brown people and not enough white people represented?

You realize that's pretty tone deaf, right?

Well, well, well, how the turntables...

I see: it's not about diversity, it's about pay-back.

+1 I work for a non-profit that does excellent work with you (our staff is beloved and our youth have amazing outcomes). We use a near-peer model and have transitioned over decade from a mostly white staff serving mostly kids of color to a staff, including leadership, that looks like our students. And now, this is exactly what I worry about when I send out a newsletter-if there aren't any white people does that mean I'll start getting notes from white people (and I do) that they no longer feel connected to the organization-for reasons they can't quite articulate. As a white person working with a majority of people of color, living in a neighborhood with a majority of people of color, sending my kid to a school with not a ton of white kids, I say embrace the change OP. It's been a long time coming.

White people are so embarrassing sometimes.

OP let me guess you send your kids to Leckie or Kramer, right?

reasonable thread imo

seems like a pretty obvious omission from the diversity checkbox

I so wish I could get everyone in this city to read White Fragility.

Oh hi, OP! Thanks for revealing more about your motivations for starting this thread.

31% if staff don’t have updated clearances, the achievement gap is widening, teachers haven’t received stipend to pay for supplies, playgrounds are closed because of lead, major after school provider was let go because of sexual assault, there’s budget shortfall on teacher pay, but this is what irks you.
