I was reading the article below and I am considering a job there.
Does anybody know if it is common that SEC workers telework 4 or 5 days a week? The article says the option to "apply" so it means the supervisor has to approve what is the likelihood of this? Any insight would be appreciated. https://fedtechmagazine.com/article/2018/05/sec-uscis-turn-telework-flexibility-and-lure-top-talent “Over the years, our telework program has really grown, especially in negotiating the collective bargaining agreement of 2007,” she says. That covers about 3,500 nonsupervisory employees. “In 2013, the expanded program became permanent.” Employees who have teleworked two days per week are eligible to apply for three. To apply for four, the employee must telework three days a week for a year. After proving themselves at four, they can apply for five. |
| It really depends on your division. In some divisions, such as OCIE, expanded telework (3 days or more) is capped. In other divisions, such as CF, expanded telework is not capped and is subject to the discretion of your supervisor. You also have to work there for one year for each day of telework you get (1 day after one year, 2 days after 2 years, etc.). |
| The three people I know at the SEC, who've been there for more than ten years, hardly ever go to work. |
| Totally depends on your division and supervisor. |
I must be in the wrong division. I'm still working my butt off! |
You are not allowed one day a week even if you are transferring from another federal agency? I already served my probation. |
You can still work your butt off at home--just more efficiently because you don't have to commute. |
I hope you aren’t a manager. These are completely unrelated. I work much longer hours and am much more productive at home. |
People who telework also work their butts off. |
The SEC is primarily accountants and attorneys and we don't get a lot of laterals so I'm not sure how it would work for a lateral. Most of the accountants come from Big 4 or in-house and most attorneys come from large law firms with a small contingent being hired straight out of law school. I don't recall anyone ever asking to telework before hitting the one year mark. The rule used to be that one's probationary status was one factor for a manager to consider when allowing telework but in the last two years it seems to have morphed into telework not being allowed until after one year. |
Okay, thanks for the feedback.... This gives me a more realistic view of how telework is given at the SEC. The article seems to make it much generous that when it actually is. Thank you for everybody's comments and feedback. |
It’s plenty generous for employees who have proven track records. |
