Hair color question - Balayage

Anonymous
I got balayage highlights in early July along with a root touch up and it came out perfect. The color was bright cool blonde with a darker root but very defined highlights. I went back last week just to do roots and a few more highlights. This time they toner they used turned all the highlights yellow/gold versus cool blonde. I went back to get the warmth taken out and they used ash toner and now hair looks all one color of ashy blonde with greenish undertones. The balayage highlights are ruined. What can I do to fix this?

Cut it short and wait. If you keep putting color on your hair, you are going to make it so much worse.

This exact thing happened to me about a month ago. My hair turned green. They ended up emergency stripping all of the dye and re-dying my whole head ashy brown (it was all that could be done at the time). I was so crushed. In the past 6 weeks, the brown has been fading and I'm left with damaged, bleached hair. I am trying to tone at home with purple shampoo and improve health of the hair with Redken PH bonder. I am going back in to see what they can do in another 2 weeks after my hair has healed a bit more.

This might be best. You could try doing a color glaze for temporary color fix while you wait to grow yours out until you have enough healthy hair to accept a permanent color again.

What is your natural color/undertone?

OP here -- natural is a dark blonde w/ gold/red undertones. I think went they did the correction they did too much ash and now it is like mushroom colored.

I am not familiar with balayage but I don’t understand what happened to your hair. I get my roots done every 6-7 weeks with highlights done every 3rd visit. Highlights and color are consistent - it’s hard for other people to tell when I get it done. No toner.

Maybe you need a new salon?

Yeah, I am not a fan of toner but it seems that a lot of stylist rely on it these days b/c they aren't as good w/ color.

OP, just curious....
Did the original stylist do your recent touch-up?

Also, do you have photos of your hair in July so that after your hair gets healthier you can get it done right again?

So sorry this happened to you.

OP here--I do not have picture from July. I should point out that my hair doesn't look unhealthy. It's just very drab and my balayage highlights that I paid for previous were ruined by the toner. I am just wondering what can be done now to salvage my highlights and how to prevent this in future.

Don’t use toner?

Seriously. I’ve been having my hair highlighted since my 20’s and now (late 30’s) also need color for the grays. Good colorists don’t need toner. I’ve been seeking my current stylist for 6 years and she has never once mentioned toner.

^^seeing not seeking.

Toner is the most important step?

I've always had a toner done, though I am confused by a toner making color more brassy; usually it is put on to combat that shade after highlights are done.

She said it looks mushroom colored, not brassy. OP- please don't take advice from people who thinking their stylist doesn't use toner on highlights. SMH.
