When to use real plates without close supervision?

Anonymous
My 2.5 year old still uses divided toddler plates though he does use real glasses. He occasionally has real plates if we are having larger foods like a sandwich, or a quick snack, but I always sit at the table and supervise. At what age did you feel comfortable leaving your kid with real plates and cups? I’d still be in the same room (maybe cooking or cleaning in the kitchen and would be watching for proper bites and chewing), just not sitting right next to him.

Ha! This is OP and I definitely consider Corelle a real plate! I still love the medium Corelle plates myself...

We get our kids eating from “real” (cheap) bowls early, maybe even before 2 years old. Definitely while still in the high chair.

But we only switch to glass cups at 4 or so, and even then we prefer the hard plastic cups.

Bowls only get broken when they’re bring stupid. Cups slip through little fingers all the time.

What are your plates made of? Ours are porcelain I think and they're pretty sturdy. Not that they couldn't break, but I know we've dropped them a few times and they haven't. What's your concern? That something is going to shatter and cut your kid? Or that the plate is going to be ruined? Our plates are pretty nice and they weren't cheap but I wouldn't care if one broke (adults have broken many of them over the years so we just buy more). I wouldn't give me kids certain glasses that we have only because I think they'd be unsafe if they shattered, not because I'd mind replacing them.

My 3 year old only uses porcelain now. She's never broken any. They aren't extremely expensive, but are cheaper than the china DH and I use. She was SO excited to use a "special cup" when she got her porcelain cup that matches the plate.

I've always used real plates with our kids. That's what they use at restaurants too.

Same here. Plastic is for picnics.

12 year old uses real dishes, the 10 and 7 year olds still use plastic. My dishes are nice and the pattern discontinued so I'm not up for taking chances.

I started using corelle (whicj is what we all use) at about 2. My twins are almost 4 and only one item has broken. I prefer them because they stack efficiently in our dishwasher. Kid plates take up a lot more room. They still use plastic cups usually though.
