Car seat for travel after outgrowing cosco scenera next

Anonymous
As the title indicates, I'm in the market for a new travel carseat. DD is a big 2.5yo, about 37lbs and 37 inches. She's too tall (and almost too heavy) for her cosco carseat. We have a lot of travel coming up this fall. What are my options for a reasonable light weight rear facing seat? It looks like 40lbs is the max rear facing for the evenflo and other commonly recommended ones.

She rear faces in our car and we're going to be traveling in Europe with a car for nearly a month so I really feel pretty strongly about keeping her rear facing. But I'd also like it to fit in her airplane seat. Does such a thing exist? Thanks!

Could you make it work for the trip? I have a Cosco and it's rated for 40 inches and 40 pounds rear facing. If she isn't super uncomfortable in it I'd just use the one you have.

Her head clears the top of the cosco seat so unfortunately I don't think it's safe for her anymore. I may just lug our massive britax for our 1 month trip and see if we can hold out on a new thing until she's ready for a different kind of seat/harness/booster alltogether.

After 40 pounds weight, very few of the seats with RF and nothing will be lightweight. Most are rated for 40 pounds and under RF.

I'd get a Cosco Finale if you want cheap/lightweight but its FF.

Check the manual. Some allow it to go to the ears, some the top of the head.

Our huge heavy Chiccho Nextfit Zip only went up to 45lbs rear-facing. I don't know of any travel carseat that would fit your bill.

Thanks, that's what I suspected. Our britax rear faces to something like 50lbs but it's massive. I guess we'll just ff for the trip.

There is an evelflo that goes to 70 lbs, I think. It's a harnessed booster. It's what we used with my giant son when he outgrew his travel seat. I will not be refacing though.

we had the evenflo maestro until we upgraded to the Pico. Both are FF, even though DD still RF in her Clek at home

Are you sure her weight is accurate? 37lbs is over 99th percentile for a 30mo. Even if it is accurate, though, she's unlikely to gain more than 2lbs over 3-4 months and you'd be fine with a 40lb RF weight limit.

I'd look at Graco Contender or Evenflo Sonos. They're both 40lb but taller shells.

I agree that you aren't going to have a lot of options at that height/weight. I'd switch to a FF harnessed seat. We have the Evenflo Maestro that converts to a high-back booster, and it's relatively lightweight.

Safety 1st Guide 65. We have two of these for travel and they're great. Super light weight. Rear facing to 40 lbs, so you should still be good, and when you wake up and decide to turn the seat around is easy to do.

We use an evenflo sonus-kid loves it.

Fair point, I had her stand on our scale at home so it could be off by a pound or so but she weighed 35 lbs at the doc several months ago. Regardless, I agree that an inexpensive option that can accommodate her height and goes up to 40lbs should get us through this winter. The Contender looks good at $120, which I can stomach since we'll be using it daily for 3 weeks. Its shell height is 5" taller than the Cosco Scenera Next which I assume I can interpret to mean it will accommodate a taller kid?

Maybe the Evenflo SureRide? The Sonos isn't the best option for taller kids. From CSFTL's review:
For a bigger kiddo...the Sonus wouldn’t be the longest lasting seat. We’d suggest the Evenflo SureRide for budget- conscious families who have children on this end of the growth curve. However, for more average to smaller sized kiddos, the Sonus is a great option!

My 30 month DS is 36 inches and just under 28 pounds. I think we may replace our Cosco Apt with the SureRide. A Sonos would be fine for my kid, but if I can get some extra rear-facing time out of the seat, i'd like to.
