4 year old running fever, cancel 9am dentist tomorrow?

Anonymous
She’s scheduled to get a cavity filled in the morning and has been running a high fever all today. My husband is adamant we should take her to dentist, I say no we reschedule. Mom is right yes?

What exactly do you mean by "high fever"? Any other symptoms, like vomiting or diarrhea?

This all matters.

I don’t think the dentist will want you infecting his entire waiting room or staff possibly. It’s a no brainer. Stay home. Besides, your child is extra crabby I assume. Don’t make her get dental work.

Of course you cancel.

Reschedule. Not only for her benefit, but for the benefit of those around her. Do not bring a kid with a fever out in public. Do you really think the dentist and hygienist want to be working in the mouth of a kid with a fever, while the kid is breathing all over them? Hard pass.

Actually no it doesn't. She's running a fever, and that's all that matters. Don't be a jerk.

Dentist will probably charge you though. 9am appt is too late to cancel w/o paying

You doofus. Some people call a 99F temp a "high fever." I'm serious.

And technically, that isn't even a fever.

Call the dentist in the morning and ask. Tell them the temp she ran today. It’s likely they’ll want to reschedule, because there are some (small) risks to using any kind of anesthesia when someone is sick.

No it’s doesn't. A fever is a sign your body is fighting an infection.

They might not. If they know what is good for their business.

A fever is a fever is a fever. You’re the doofus. I hope you don’t drag your sick child all over the place or make them go to school with a fever.

Which is why it matters whether it is actually a fever. If OP had posted a number, I wouldn't have asked.

I've worked in a pediatrician's office. I swear to bejesus, this was an actual comment from a mom: "Well, Sally usually runs really low, so 100 is really high for her." [more questions] "Yes, I added a degree because I took it in her armpit." It's like pulling teeth to sort out what's going on.

It's not technically a fever until it's a core temp of 100.4, but people make all sorts of interpretations on their own. Really, they do. You would not believe.

The term "fever" has an actual definition. Unfortunately, may times people don't use it.

Op here. Fever is 102.4.
