Can a Ti-84 replace a Ti-83?

My daughter’s supply list only shows a Ti-83 but she was given a Ti-84 from her cousin. Do I need to buy the 83 or are the calculators pretty much the same? Both are so expensive!

Sounds like 84 is the better calculator. It is more expensive than the 83, but looks like it is cheaper than the 83 plus.
