Can't find the yoga studio I want

Anonymous
I've done yoga since 1995 off and on and was primarily taught by a Kripalu instructor. I miss that style of yoga deeply. Every studio within a decent radius of my home is a power flow studio. I've been going to one of these for years and I'm just so sick of it. There's no depth to the postures, no alignment taught, and the classes don't build on each other (I understand, it's always a different group of people so they can't).

Basically, this is just a vent. I really miss the style of yoga I was doing 15-20 years ago and I'm sad that I can't find it anywhere. I'm in NOVA - anyone have any leads?

Who says yoga must be done in a class/group?

That's true, but part of what I loved about my Kripalu instructor is that they are trained to give personalized guidance and gentle "corrections" on postures. I'm looking for that again.

The only Kripalu studio in NoVA (that I'm aware of) is Dream Yoga in McLean. There used to be a Kripalu-trained instructor at Pure Prana (now YogaWorks) in Alexandria, but I'm not sure if she's still there (and I can't remember her name). You can take a look at Unity Woods for Iyengar on a semester system (and so, so much focus on alignment and gradually building your practice). Ashtanga for one-on-one instruction and gradually deepening your practice. Most of the Ashtanga studios in the area are in DC itself, but in Arlington I think Sun and Moon offers morning Mysore and you can also check out Ashtanga Nation.

+1 Unity Wood and Sun and Moon.

This might sound weird, but what about county classes. I took Pilates through arlington county and it was very much like what you described. The instructor would correct people and each class built off the others.

You could call the Kripalu Institute and ask for a list of instructors in your area.

Other than that, I agree on Unity Woods.
