35 day cycles?

Anonymous
I am just starting TTC #2. Every since having DC#1, my cycles have been irregular. Some months, they will be short, and as of late, they have been long- almost 5 weeks long. We had a lot of trouble TTC #1, so the thought of an additional complication is daunting! Has anyone else had this happen - is this an indication something is wrong? Does this mean I am ovulating late, or early? FWIW, I am 31. I am hesitant to go back to the RE yet (for emotional/sanity reasons if nothing else- I'd love to try to go it on my own this time)! Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you need to chart - check your temp, cervical mucous, etc. so you can figure out when you're ovulating. 35 days isn't that long. I am currently on month #1 of TTC #2, but when I conceived #1 - I ovulated on day 20 and didn't test positive until day 35.

Have you read Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler? This is the bible on TTC and highly recommend it if you have not read it yet.

I had gyn. surgery 2 years ago and ever since my periods fluctuate between 28 and 35 days. This is normal. Some women just have longer cycles and that can stem from any number of things. We just went through our first round of IUI right after Thanksgiving. It looks like taking a week off of work made ovulation occur earlier than normal. That happens. Stress and lots of other things factor in. Chart and use OPKs. a 35 day cycle is still well in the realm of normal. You just need to chart to help figure it all out. Generally I ovulate around day 17 if I'm having a 35 day cycle.

I can't emphasize enough, chart and OPK!!!

Probably means you will ovulate closer to day 16-20 (rather than 14). Good luck!

From my own experience with varying cycles and long/short cycles over the years, and from everything I've read about the topic there is really NO telling when you ovulate - so make sure you know when it is, either by a combination of the "mucous monitoring", temping (if you can do that, and it seems to show a clear pattern), measuring your LH surge (best in my opinion, can get cheap strips via internet), or the OV watch. There are so many options, and all much cheaper than the RE. So give it a try for a few cycles with a method that will point out your ovulation for sure. Then you can still go to the RE. Good luck!
