| My son will be going to second grade this fall. We moved from the south to MD. We are aware the PG school system isn't all that great but we're staying with family until our apartment is ready in Silver Spring (Mont. County has a better school system than PG county according to our research). I called the school and they are requesting my son's last report card from first grade. We misplaced his report card and his previous school was shut down and cannot retrieve any records, for that matter. Does anyone have any experience with this school? Can he still attend without a previous report card. Please no negative comments. I would like some insight from other parents so I know what to expect Monday morning. Thanks!! |

They are required by law to take him. You'll need some sort of proof of residency. For your situation, you'll probably need a notarized letter that says you have an agreement that you are living with family temporarily. McKinney-Vento applies in this situation since you are in temporary housing. You may have to push it. Some administrators don't know the legal requirements. If you have the third quarter report card from first grade, bring that. They are likely looking for skill level information unless he's a year younger or a year older than other second grade classmates.
How much longer until your apartment is ready in Silver Spring? If it's close to the beginning of September, I'd just bring documentation of a lease agreement and enroll him at that school rather than moving him shortly after the start of school. |
| Does his age work with MD requirements regarding the grade he should be in? Assuming yes and you have his birth cert, they are required to enroll him. We take undocumented kids into school all the time and they don’t have all their records when showing up either. |

I’m not sure about Calverton ES but our ES enrolls refugee and undocumented students regularly and I can’t imagine they have report cards. In fact, many haven’t been in a formal school environment for years.
I think that you will have a bigger problem showing residency. Make sure you carefully read the requirements before you go to the school to make sure you have the right documents. They are very strict about it. |

They don’t need his report card, unless he misses the age cutoff for 2nd grade. If he is 7 before 8/31, they are legally required to enroll him if you can prove residency. If he misses the cutoff date, then yes, you will have some hoops to jump through.
If you have signed a lease on the place in SS, I would enroll him in that school and suck it up and drive him until you move in (if you can). |
