Tell me about the Audi Q7. I hear Audis stay in the shop and once you're off warranty can be money pits. Is this true?
I know everyone loves to drive them but tell me about reliability/repairs. Seems the closest Audi dealer to me is Arlington and would hate to have to drive there from Alexandria for constant repairs, warranty or not. |
| If you have money to get one, you shouldn’t have to worry about repair bills. But yes it is a money pit |
| My brother worked for Audi and said he'd never buy one, and that I shouldn't either. He had a loaner car, so that was nice, but the overriding corporate theme was, "It's not covered by the warranty." |
| Sounds like you can't afford one. |
|
Lease one and see is it goes.
That is what I think I am going to do. I only drive 5k miles a year so seems like a decent way to go and punt it before the repair cycle starts. |

| Buy one coming off a lease and make sure it is certified with an extended warranty. It will have been through the shake down period. |

We have the money to buy one but that doesn't mean I want to waste my money on repairs. Not wanting a money pit doesn't mean I can't afford one. We have a Benz GL and it's very reliable bit we had it a long time. We bought it outright so no payments. Thinking of switching to Q7 vs new GLS for our new car, but not if it's always going to be in the shop.
US News ranked Q7 over GLS for best luxury 7 seater so I'm asking. |
| The absolute worst cars for repair bills. I have a Q5 and it's been a huge mistake. It's only 3 years old and literally wouldn't start a couple weeks ago. Got a loaner and a bill for $3700. We are seriously considering getting rid of the car while it's newish and nothing a Corolla or something. |
what was the issue? |

The biggest draw back that I have seen with the Q7 is that it does not have a spare tire and uses run-flats.
I travel to the beach/family trips a few times a year and while the run flat can get you off the road - if you are in the middle of nowhere it is not a common tire to find. and depending on the tire brand you have may not be able to be repaired/mechanic will not repair. I do not think I can risk being stuck somewhere for a few days waiting for a tire to get shipped. |
| I've had two Audis. I kept my A4 for 10 years and other than oil changes and brakes (which, granted, were relatively expensive), it didn't need any repairs. It was a fantastic car and fun to drive. I've had my Q5 for 9 years now, and it's dying. It had major issues the first couple years (all covered, thankfully) but now needs some expensive repairs (oil leak, cracked engine mounts, etc.). It's a shame, because I love it. |
| I would never buy an Audi, but I would lease one. |
|
We're on our 7th Audi. Almost all were based on the A4 platform, but never any major problems. Our current A4 is only a year old, but the A4 before that we kept for 6 years and no major issues. We're really good about taking it in for scheduled maintenance when the car says it's time though.

This....I NEVER purchase vehicles with those garbage run flat tires. There is no spare tire and if you get a nail on the side, you are hosed as the car is NOT DRIVEABLE with this condition. It has to be towed and yes, those run flats are not exactly a shelf item at a tire store or Costco. This crap happened to me on a Vette while on a trip to the outer banks. Had to have it towed and ruined the trip. Sold the damn car after that..... |
