Historical Inquiry into Global Humanities 6

Anonymous
We recently received a letter that my rising 6th grader (going to ROcky Hill MS next year) got accepted into the the Global Humanities class. The letter makes it seem like they've never had this course in this middle school but due to having a cohort of students needing the enrichment, they decided to make it available at the school starting this year. I could be wrong though. We already received a letter earlier this year that she got accepted into AIM for math so we were surprised to hear about the global humanities course recently. Can anyone give insights on:
A) If you had a child in this class last year at a local school, what was it like? Whats the difference between this class and the non-advanced class? B) If you are a Rocky Hill parent, was this course available there last year?

Mine took it at NB and LOVED it! I don't know much about what they covered or about the difference btw it and the other class, but it was definitely his favorite class in 6th grade.

Basically they added two literary works, a model UN unit, and some document-based research assignments to the pre-existing class. Also my DC's favorite class in 6th!

OP here. That's great to hear!

I believe this will be the first year the course has been offered at upcounty middle schools. Last year they rolled it out in most downcounty middle schools.

DS took it at Pyle and it was his favorite class. It was extremely easy so I wouldn’t worry about the course load.

My daughter took it at Silver Creek. Favorite class. They wrote document based question responses throughout the year (similar to an AP history class in the 6th gr). Her teacher was wonderful

My daughter's favorite class last year at NB. She loved the teacher and the content. Definitely did not get the sense that kids found it extremely easy, but it was highly engaging.

My DD also took it at Pyle last year. It was a 90 min class and I think it would have been helped greatly if the entire staff of that dept were more engaged with their teaching roles and less resentful of the general student class. There is something rotten in the history dept at Pyle, completely rotten.

These enriched classes are so wonderful! It's like being in the magnet without the long bus ride.

I don’t teach at Pyle, however, I know everyone who does professionally and I’m casual friends with a couple. In general, they are not happy that the class meant for a truly gifted cohort has turned into the latest way for Pyle parents to feel good about themselves.

But what’s the problem? The content is too hard for “non-gifted” students, so it’s not easy/enjoyable to teach to kids who don’t fully understand/engage with it? How has it turned into such a class?

Gaithersburg MS has it listed as the only 6th grade World Studies class.
