I'd like to make a play area next to the kitchen where there are hardwood floors for my now mobile 9 month old. Do I need to use those big foam alphabet pieces that come together? They seem soft, but not the most attractive. What about just a regular rug...is this soft enough and will my DD get rug burn from crawling around it? Sorry, first-time mom and just want to make a fun and comfy place to play!
I would get a rug. With my first I had the ugly rubber mats ( they were grey) all over the place. I laugh now, but nothing could change my mind. on 2nd baby I bought a really thick rug. It was great, shag. I felt better about him falling on something like that than hard wood floors. Have fun!
We have the alphabet squares from One Step Ahead. Not so great to match our decor but they are temporary and Our daughter loves them. They're actually much thicker than most and I can't tell you how many bumped heads they saved us when she started walking.
I've seen Skip Hop padded flooring that's modern decor-friendly at Dawn Price Baby on Capitol Hill. Shades of green and brown, maybe? Not primary color alphabets.
We use large blue foam tiles available at target.com - they are 2 feet x 2 feet. I have 8 of them on the floor and they look pretty good. Search for "Step 2 Play Mats" on target.com.
The mats have the advantage over carpet for craft projects later. playdough, crayons etc can ruid a rug and are harder to clean up off of a rug.

I know a number of people who've gone with the FLOR carpet tiles for their playrooms. They are very stylish and individual tiles can be replaced if they get damaged.
