6th grade girl trends

My awkward only child will be entering 6th grade this year. It’s a big middle school with kids from 3 elementary schools, so she’s going to have the opportunity to make new friends. I know some will think it’s shallow but I want to set her up for success by having the right stuff. Can middle school moms chime in about the must haves?

Def getting a Hydroflask

Maybe a FjallRaven backpack?

Locker decorations - are they still important?

Don’t. I understand the intent but appreciate your daughter for who she is, where she is in her maturity (she may be one of those kids who is still more child-like than trying to swim in the ever changing race of popular culture. If she pushes for something-sure-embrace the changes SHE wants to take but guide her on being true to herself.

I should have clarified. She really wants to fit in also and have the right stuff. We’re just not sure what the right stuff is

You and your daughter are going about this all wrong. Wait to see what group she enjoys hanging out with and go from there. Just being herself is all she needs. Stop this trend of materially fitting in.

Lots of black leggings and shorts (Lululemon is most popular but that “style” works), Birkenstocks, hydroflask. I wouldn’t worry about backpack as that is parked in the locker all day.

Also, make sure she has a phone. That is how all socializing is done.

Thanks for the actual response. Got the phone and it’s been great for socializing

My social but awkward daughter is heading into 6th also. She’s a sporty kid and lives in stretchy leggings and athletic wear. I’m so curious if and how she’ll change her style in middle school.

What’s up with hydro flask? Isn’t that just a water bottle?

OK I’m the PP. What I’ve done with the two of my girls who wanted ti be on trend (I have 4 - 3 are now adults, one in MS) is look at what they see that they like in the shops and loo at other kids that interest them and figure out a first day outfit but as far as doing a big shop-go through the first week and see what ‘kids are wearing’: it will still be summer and usually a 4 day week so feel confident but not flashy first day and then we’ll do a big shop IF needed over first weekend. A pottery barn teen backpack is probably a good start and ask at Nordstroms shoe suggestions if truly no idea.

Stranger Things is certainly one of shows lots of kids are watching-so that’s another thing to look at: tv shows and music.

2 of my 4 were truly uninterested in fashion or even just not being uncool: they had their own quirks and embraced and were embraced for them. One was very fashionable the other just wanting to fit in. I get it but I always let the girls lead.

This is very much at the micro level and depends on your specific middle school.

My DD entering 6th at a big middle school. She has a nice bunch of friends - not sure if she is the "cool" kids - I would not know. She has no idea what a hydroflask is. She will be reusing her backpack from last year.

For shoes - she currently wears Converse - buts asked for a pair of retro Adidas for her next pair as these will be worn out by the end of the summer.

My rising 7th grader said at the end of the school year it was Crocs, Vans, Simply Southern t-shirts. And I just bought her a hydro flask for her bday.

Nothing too little girly, like tops with sayings.

My rising 6th grader is obsessed with vsco insta and tik Tok account where they share clothes, accessories and room decor trends.

checkered vans, jean cut off shorts, brandy Melville, hydroflasks with stickers, pura vida bracelets, scrunchies, all seem on trend, but I am a 40 something nerd so don't kill the messenger. I check my daughter's phone and accounts regularly and these are what I see often.

My DD is going into 6th grade and she is a socially dominant, "popular" cool kid. She told me that going into 6th grade, she no longer wants any clothes from Justice and would like to shop at the juniors section of target and forever 21. In general, forever 21 has pretty mature clothing for an 11 year old so we stick to the leggings, t shirts, and sweatshirts. She is extremely into hoodies, and prefers them to be oversized. She wears Vans and some vividly colored fashion sneakers. The loves scrunchies and says that you should wear them on your hand like a bracelet. Bike shorts are in style, paired with a t shirt. As a pp noted, Stranger Things is very popular and she wants any ST merch (target has a line of ST merch). She also asks for merch from YouTubers like James Charles. NASA themed clothing is on trend. She hasn't mentioned backpacks. She is an athlete with strong opinions about water bottles and doesn't seem to focus on a single brand.

Oh and pp here. I should say, she has indicated that Jansport is the official cool bag, but she hasn't asked for one. I think she already has one. But she hasn't asked for a new one.

Except for the hydroflask (which I had to google) I should have just saved my wardrobe from 1990 and passed it all down.
