Back surgery after baby is born

Anonymous
I was diagnosed with a ruptured disc during pregnancy, L5/S1. It has gotten worse and I have nerve damage/muscle loss. My orthopedic now suggests I start thinking about and meeting with neurosurgeons for back surgery after the baby is born in late January. I know someone who went in for back surgery 20 years ago and ended up paralyzed so I'm a bit anxious. Does anyone have a recommendation for a great neurosurgeon or advice/experience with this?

Thanks!

I had 2 ruptured discs (L4/L5 & L5/S1) that I had repaired 3 years ago by my amazing, fantastic, wonderful ortho, Dr. Ira Fisch. Can you tell I really love him?? He did an amazing job--small scar, fast recovery, etc-- and I am *so* much better now!
Dr. Fisch is located in North Bethesda but honestly, even if you aren't close to there, I recommend meeting with him. His number is 301-530-1010. He also saw a friend of mine who was having upper back pain and helped him to figure out that it wasn't a back issue but rather a heart issue. My friend ended up having an emergency quad. bypass! My point is, he doesn't rush to surgery either which is refreshing.
Honestly, I know how painful it can be. Please do not worry too much about the surgery. If you have an experienced surgeon, this really is fairly routine. And you will never regret having the surgery. Once you get to the point of that much pain, there's really no PT or acupuncture that can help, unfortunately. I lived with my disc problem for 10 years before I got it fixed and I'm so glad I did! Your back may never be exactly the same but you *can* live with it.
I hope this helps!

My husband had the same thing several years ago -- it was agony. He had a discectomy done by Dr. Kalhorn at Georgetown. He was very good and the recovery was great.
