How long should I wait to have a baby after moving to a new internal role?

Is a year enough time? DH and I originally planning to start TTC now, but I got a really good opportunity to move laterally to another department that I’ve always been interested in. I was thinking of waiting 2-3 months and then starting, so that I have at least a year in before going on maternity leave. Is that enough time? I don’t want to wait too too long because I don’t want my kids to be too far apart.

I wouldn't wait at all. Assuming you get pregnant right away you still have 3 months from now for them to mesh your work with your reputation. It's not like starting from 0 with an external move

Agree with PP, you might as well start trying now, or taking any steps you need first. I planned to wait 3 months after an internal transfer too. I wound up having a 2-3 month delay because it took that long to get into see my gyno to take my IUD out, and then she told me it would take 3-6 months to regain fertility (which i didn't realize). By the time the baby is born i will have been there 1.5 years!

Agree with PPs. Move now.

There's no good time to have a baby. There's always a reason why it's bad timing in your career or life plan. By the same logic, it's always the right time to have a baby. So start now.

Start TTC now.

If it was a job with a new company, I'd say wait 3 months so you would (presumably) qualify for FMLA. But since it's an internal role, start now. We've been trying for 7 months for #2. It can take a while!

Agree with try now! I received a major and unexpected promotion due to an organizational re-structuring that happened in 1st trimester of my 1st pregnancy. Had the position been openly competed, I never would have applied for it knowing that I was expecting. The first year 8-9 mo after coming back from leave were really hard but now it’s been 3 years and I’m so glad that I have this role.

Internal move meaning you don't have to wait for FMLA? I'd want to be in the new position at least 6 months, so I wouldn't let this change my plans, unless the move isn't for a few months.
