A second Hurricane Katrina?

Anyone watching the incoming Hurricane Barry storm? They're predicting a Category One Hurricane.

New Orleans and places along the MS river NEED to start prepping NOW for what could be the worst flooding in decades. This is one of those "perfect storm" scenarios where conditions leading up to #Barry are almost as bad as they can be..

Forgot to add that parts of NOLA are already flooding today.

So glad that we did a New Orleans trip two years ago.

What do you mean "second Hurricane Katrina" in the title and then you say they are predicting category two..
You do realize that Katrina was cat 5, right?

Fair enough - so you think there's nothing to worry about?

Katrina was a cat 3 when it hit but the flooding didn't occur until the storm surge levees failed. Cat 1 or cat 5 it wouldn't have mattered. Katrina was so devastating because the levees failed after the storm passed.

This upcoming storm is such a risk because the Mississippi is already at flood levels due to the rain this spring and the decision of policymakers not to open a main spillway to drain some of the water out. The river levees are 20 feet high, which is where the Mississippi is expected to be this weekend. If the water rises higher, the levees can't keep it in. Moreover, these are levees that were built after the 1927 flood and haven't ever been tested like this. It's conceivable that they'll fail which would be fatal to the city.

The flooding from Katrina was from the storm surge, not the rain.

Just read this on the weather channel:

“A Mississippi River surge is forecast for 20 feet in New Orleans, the very top of the levees protecting the city.”

New Orleans is incredibly vulnerable and will keep flooding over and over and over again. Honestly I think we need to stop rebuilding and accept reality.

I’m confused op. Katrina was the worst level it can be - 5. Your post says this is a 1. That’s like a windy rainstorm

The reality that the city is 20ft below sea level, and surrounded by tidal waters? That reality?

I don’t think it’s quite 20 feet, but yeah. It’s really stupid to keep putting money into rebuilding parts of the city that will just flood again in a few years.
