Follow on question: Nutritional Supplements for kids with SPD?

Anonymous
Sorry to sound clueless, but it was mentioned in another thread about giving omegas and vitamin E to help with SPD? As context, my DD is in OT but we recently moved outside the DC area to a place where there are very, very few resources for her and I feel like I'm a little behind the curve on potential therapies. Can anyone elaborate on how to use the supplements or where I can read more? Thank you!

Bump. Not the OP, but I have the same question, if anyone has insight. I'm particularly interested in your experiences with Fish Oil. thanks!

"The Late Talker" by Marilyn Agin, Geng and Nicholl has a chapter on Fish oil supplementation. Not a lot of real info out there! And this is re speech issues specifically.

We use fish oil (2t/day), super E (1 every other day), epsom salt baths (almost every night), and methyl B-13 3X a week. Seem to be working pretty well, nothing dramatic but slow changes in a positive direction

Sorry to ask such a basic question but: what are epsom salts and what are they supposed to do? Is there any harm associated with them?

I assume you mean Methyl B12. B13 (Orotic acid) is not really recognized as vitamin and is not sold in a methylated form (having no bearing on the methylation process).

Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) can be absorbed through the skin in a 1% solution. Magnesium has been found to be helpful to children with ASD and sensory disorders. Also, it has mild analgesic properties for sore muscles and irritated skin.

Thanks for the answer! It is indeed hard to find foods with enough magnesium so I may look into epsom salts for bathtime.

I use fish oil for my son with mild sensory issues as well as epsom salts baths a few days per week. I have no idea if they work though. And a good multivitamin. And I try to stay away from artificial colors which can make him bounce off the walls.

There are also good articles here at the links re: kids and for everyone.

Thank you, thank you, everyone! This information has been hard for me to find. What does your pediatrician say about suppliments, fish oil specifically? Mine looked at me like I had three heads when I asked, then blew it off.

Our daughter's ped is super conservative and he is fine with fish oil (we've asked serveral docs, including a dev ped as well). It's no different than eating salmon a few times per week (which the docs also highly recommended). If language is at all an issue, the ratio of 3 to 6 is important. We used a 3 6 9 fish oil at first and saw some improvement but once we switched to Nordic Naturals Complete which is a concentrated 3 6 (2:1) ratio there was a big language explosion. Peds don't seem to be trained much at all in nutriton, funnily enough, my elderly mother was put on prescription concentrated omegas and vitamin E for overal health benefits by her internist who specializes in geriatrics.

We're been doing the balancing ourselves (1 part EPA to 2 parts EFA), also NN, but it would be SO much easier to buy the NN complete and just be done. A few questions for this PP:
- what daily dose do you use and how much does your child weigh? Our son is 36lbs and we've been doing 2 tsp EFA to 1 tsp EPA each day, but we've been doing this so long I was thinking we should raise the dosage.

- where do you get the NN Complete? We're relatively new to DC area and I've been buying everything online, but I'd prefer to have a place to get it in person since we're out of EPA as of this morning.

Thanks very much.

Indeed B12... 2 and 3 are so close on the keyboard
