My almost 6-year-old DS has been asking for a race track with cars for ages - and I am a bit overwhelmed by all the choices out there! I would really appreciate your recommendations on which ones are good - looking for quality, durability and high fun factor. I don't mind paying a bit more for a quality toy. Thank you! |
My 5yo son loves his Hot Wheels race track. I love that it folds up really nicely for storage and also that he can mix and match the cars that he races (most Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars work on the track). Also, if he misplaces a car, it's no big deal because we have tons of them!
This is a link for Amazon, but we got it at Target last Christmas for $20. http://www.amazon.com/Hot-Wheels-4-Lane-Raceway/dp/B000JSI63G/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&s=toys-and-games&qid=1259865806&sr=8-15 |
Highly recommend anything by Darda. Doesn't require batteries. Easy to put together and highly configurable, and the cars go really, really fast.

Love to hear more suggestions. We've found the Hotwheels stuff to be super junky so I'm always looking for alternatives. Last year I bought one of those Carrera slot wheel sets for my 5yo but it's really a bit too old for him. I've seen the Darda ones at Childs Play and it looks like a good alternative. |
Not the OP, but thank you for this suggestion! My mind has been boggled as I've perused Hot Wheels stuff at multiple stores and countless websites! |
I have a 4.5 year old DS. He got Darda and Hot Wheels sets last X-Mas. Still plays with them but seems like he is interested in more. This year he will get a Carrerra set. I agree he is a bit young for it...but I'm hoping with supervision it will be ok. |
My son is younger, but we bought the Hot Wheels roll-up race track for him for Christmas. I thought the Toys R Us Web site was nice because you can access user reviews and sometimes demo videos of the products. I know you said you were looking for other suggestions besides hot wheels, but the Trick Tracks sets look cool, especially since your son is older (they would be a bit too complicated for my son I think). They have good reviews too. I think Amazon also posts user reviews. |
my son loves:
