Most intellectual colleges?

What are schools where students are the most excited about learning for the sake of learning?

U Chicago, St Johns College, Carleton, Swarthmore come to mind

I'm sure there are plenty of others as well as a cadre of students who fit this description at almost any college or university.

I went to Carleton and chose it in part for that reason. Definitely intellectual, yet uncompetitive. Loved it.

I felt that most people I knew at Middlebury loved learning and supporting their peers.

Are you contrasting that with schools where people are most excited about learning for the sake of preparing themselves for a successful career, or do you mean something else? I have a business degree and an engineering degree, so I don't have any familiarity with this "learning for the sake of learning" concept. All of us were just trying to get jobs.
