GW Parkway in Terrible Shape - Both Directions

Anonymous
Is it me or has the road surface conditions seriously deteriorated way worse than before? I don't use if very often, maybe once or twice a month, but today going from Key bridge to 495 in the morning and than back in the evening, I was really shocked by how bumpy it was (not counting areas with roadwork currently), and felt kind of sad too. Is my recollection off that it used to be a very well maintained 'parkway' and a very pleasant drive? Or has it truly gotten worse last few months or years?

Infrastructure has deteriorated in USA since the last 20 years. It is becoming a poor country.

The Park Service has been taking lessons from WMATA. Simply ignore the maintenance. It will get to a point where citizens demand action and you ask for more taxes. Deferred maintenance is always costlier in the long run.

It’s a national park service road and they’re seriously underfunded by Congress.

I drive it every day. It’s effing awful. And they need to fix that sinkhole already. Makes my commute a mess.

Where’s the sinkhole?
I fear the US infrastructure will continue its downward trend. The roads are terrible. I’m afraid of bridges.

Park service is underfunded and becoming more so by the day. Not a surprise, eventually it's all going to fall apart.

OP here. So it is getting worse. Is south of Key also bad? Haven't driven that stretch for a long time but thought it's also a nice drive other than the humpback bridge construction nonsense.

On a separate and more positive note. I think the bike trails around here are mostly good, at least from this bike commuter's perspective. I don't try to race on them but for day to day commute they're plenty safe and smooth.

It’s northbound between 123 and the American Legion Bridge. They’ve been repairing it for months. Meanwhile there’s even worse traffic than usual because of the construction. I drive that road every day and it’s like off-roading.

OP - The US Park Service just diverted at least $2.5 million in park entrance fees to help offset President Trump’s Party to himself.

Hopefully you were able to enjoy the fireworks, because that’s likely the most any of us will see of the money needed to repair the GW Parkway.

The fireworks is for the entire nation to enjoy. So yea I'm okay with spending money on it instead of on GW Parkway.

Honestly, what are you talking about? The fireworks were for the nation’s enjoyment? And what % of the population watched them? Mind you, the last time we had that much smoke in the city the British were invading.

It's worse on 495 to/from Maryland. It's considerably better past Spout Run towards the airport and Alexandria.

You know who I (partially) blame. (coughmarylanddriverscough)

^ realized I phrased that poorly. I mean GW Parkway is worse going to/coming from 495/Maryland, than further down.
